This beautiful hand-embroidered crewel cushion cover from Kashmir, is an ode to our nerdy resident innovator, Miss Hopzy who is always thinking of ways to reinvent her love for carrots.
Please note the woollen yarn is hand dyed and the actual colours may vary a bit from the one in the picture.
THE CRAFT
Crewel embroidery in Kashmir has been practised for over 400 years, often decorating royal garments and home furnishings . Unlike most embroidery crewel work uses fine wool threads embroidered onto cotton canvas called 'Dusooti' . The motifs often depict Kashmir's gardens : chinar leaves, tulips, vines and cypress trees. Artisans traditionally use an 'aari' hook (a fine crochet-like tool) instead of a regular needle, for speed and fluid curves. Crewel isn't just pretty, it's durable. That's why it is often used in rugs, curtains and upholstery.
