Chettinad is a region of great diversity in terms of its food, architecture and handlooms. The region is also known for its humidity and heat. Naturally the handwoven cotton sarees created here were made to bear the burden of these temperatures.
What makes these sarees unique is the skill of these artisans that make these cotton sarees look like silk thanks to the contrasting weave of the warp and weft. Their strong hold over the use of colours is also evident in their seamlessness use of various contrasting colours in a single saree including the border.
