This shirt is part of our INIMAI collection where we have attempted to showcase the versatility and adaptability of our traditional crafts to modern times. We also believe that good design ensures sustainable livelihoods for artisans.

This shirt is made from IKAT. Ikat is most well-known in India, Indonesia and Japan. The word ‘ikat’ is derived from the Malay-Indonesian word ‘mengikat’ which translates to ‘to tie’. Andhra Pradesh and, subsequently, the separated state of Telangana, are celebrated as the place of birth of Indian ikat. It is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs resist dyeing on the yarns prior to dyeing and weaving the fabric. In ikat the resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern. The yarns are then dyed. The bindings may then be altered to create a new pattern and the yarns dyed again with another colour. This process may be repeated multiple times to produce elaborate, multi-colored patterns. When the dyeing is finished all the bindings are removed and the yarns are woven into cloth.

Please note that the colours of the physical product may vary a bit from the pic.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Handwash in cold water to retain the colours longer. Do the first wash in rock salt dipped in cold water to reduce the colour bleed if there is any. The shirt may shrink a little bit and hence we have kept 1.5cm extra width and length to accommodate for the same.
